Our school Governors play an important part in helping to raise the school’s standards. They are responsible for setting the strategic direction and ensuring accountability. They act as a critical friend and are involved in monitoring and evaluating of the school’s performance.
The Governing Body comprises 15 Governors. This includes 4 Community Governors, 3 Local Education Authority Governors and 3 Staff Governors (including the Headteacher) and 5 Parent Governors who are elected by parents of the school. They meet for full Governing Body meetings 6 times a year. In addition there are sub-committee meetings for matters concerning Premises, Staffing, Curriculum & Academic Standards, Finance, Race Equality and Marketing & Communications.

Board Of Governors
Jane Ambrose (Chair) is a qualified radiography teacher. Her three children attended the school and she was chair of the Parents Association at that time. She has been on the Governing Body for 17 years. She is on the local committee of the NSPCC and runs the Leeds branch of a medical charity. Her hobbies are golf, singing with Gateways adult choir and flower arranging.
Peter Sparling (Vice Chair) is a retired solicitor, a director of Opera North, Governor of the English Speaking Union and a former leader of Leeds City Council. He is an LEA Governor and chairs the Resources sub-committee.
Denise Nathan (Headteacher) has worked in primary schools throughout the city for 28 years, most recently at Rothwell Primary where she was Deputy Headteacher for six years. She is married with four children and her interests include painting, gardening and reading.
Chris Shaw holds a law degree from the University of Leeds and worked for several years in administrative roles at the University.She is married to a lawyer and has two grown-up children and three stepchildren.She is a LEA Governor and currently chairs the Pupil Support sub-committee. She enjoys reading, gardening, travel and following Leeds United.
Ian Gould was elected as a Parent Governor and has two children at the school. He works for a rural insurance company having previously been a Loss Adjuster. His interests include golf and swimming.
Kerry Williams was elected by the staff of Bardsey Primary School to be their representative on the Governing Body. She teaches in Reception. As well as co-ordinating the Foundation Stage, she is also responsible for co-ordinating Assessment, History and Geography and Special Educational Needs throughout the school.
Linda Flockton is a Bardsey Parish Councillor and their nominated representative on the Board of Governors. Her two grown-up daughters are former pupils of the school. She has lived in Bardsey for almost 20 years. Her interests include badminton, tennis, travel and gardening.
Lynn Protheroe is a research psychologist. She has worked in early years education as both a teacher and a researcher with a special interest in learning. She has two young daughters and is an elected Parent Governor. She chairs the Teaching and Learning sub-committee.
Barbara Tranter is a Community Governor. She is married with three children and four grandchildren. She has worked in many areas connected with children. She recently retired from Registration and Inspection Officer for Leeds City County. She supports the Leeds/Wakefield NSPCC and enjoys socialising and writing children’s stories.
Jonathan Mawson was elected as a Parent Governor. He has three young children two of whom attend the school. He is a registered Architect and is a partner in a Yorkshire Architectural practice with a national reputation for the design of Swimming pools. His interests include sailing and hockey.
Debbie Howell was elected as a staff representative to the Governing Body. She has taught in both Key Stages at the school since 1992, holding various roles. She is currently KS2 coordinator, Literacy and NQT/ITT coordinator. As an Advanced Skills Teacher she also supports other teachers in the Authority. She is Governor with specific responsibility for Special Educational Needs. Married with 2 children, she enjoys tennis, skiing and art.
Sharon Young was elected as a parent governor. She works as a paediatrician with a special interest in the care of children with disabilities and special educational needs. She is married to a lawyer and has two sons who attend the school. In her free time she enjoys cycling with the family, running and horse riding.
